Thank you for your service!

On Saturday, April 17, 2010 Denver Children’s Home, in partnership with Bank of America, held the 1st Annual Cool-Fax & Kids Connect day of service. From Monaco to Lincoln almost 200 volunteers, including Denver Children’s Home’s staff, kids, and supporters, Bank of America employees, Colorado State University students and alumni, Colorado State Bank & Trust employees, AmeriCorps NCCC members, Box Studios employees, Random Acts of Kindness meetup members, Moyo Nguvu CAC employees, and many more picked up trash and swept the sidewalk in an effort to clean-up Colfax Avenue.

Volunteers arrived to check-in for the event at East High School where they were greeted by deejays from 103.5 The Fox and the drummers from the East Angel’s Drumline. Volunteers given an event promotion t-shirt and cleaning supplies and were assigned a section of Colfax Avenue to clean up. For about an hour and a half volunteers were out on Colfax Avenue working together to beautify this historical street and make a difference in our community.

A post service luncheon celebration was held at East High School’s lunchroom, where volunteers got to indulge on food that was graciously donated by Chipotle, Popeyes, Fat Sully’s, Coca-Cola, Mulberries Cake Shop, and Lovely Confections. Halfway through the luncheon one of Denver Children’s Home’s current Residents got up and spoke about her experience at DCH and the wonderful care she is constantly being given by the DCH staff. A former DCH Resident in 1983, Rick Kitsmiller, then got up and told the crowd how beneficial his time at DCH was for him. There was not a dry eye in the room, including his, as he spoke. The event ended with a drawing for a 3 person 60 minute helicopter tour of Denver compliments of Colorado Heli-Ops. The winner was a mom and her young daughter who attended this event with the Random Acts of Kindness meetup group. Deejay and DCH supporter, Dia Beshara, closed out the event with music and dancing.

Over 40 bags of trash were collected from Colfax Avenue and over $3,000 was raised for Denver Children’s Home.

The staff at Denver Children’s Home would like to extend their appreciation to all of the sponsors and those that participated in this event to help make it possible. They would especially like to thank the Cool-fax & Kids Connect committee members Barbara Perzanowski, Barbara Morris, Sarah Hull, Sarah Miller, and Dawn Paul for their unwavering commitment over the past three months to help plan and execute this event. The event would not have been possible without their dedication, hard work, and creative energy!
