Hairstylist Appreciation Day
At Denver Children’s Home, we count on and love when the community shows up for our kids. Our impact would not be as transformational without the support of donors and volunteers that care about the young people here with us. On National Hairstylist Appreciation Day (April 30th!) we want to highlight our amazing partner, Allison Clements.
In the past, Allison has offered free haircuts to the community, but six months ago she found Denver Children’s Home. “It’s already a great fit. I’ve personally known kids in similar situations and I wanted to do this to help the next generation in some small way.
The importance of volunteering was instilled in me when I was growing up. I remember going to work at the soup kitchen with my grandfather and the food bank with my grandmother when I was a kid, then getting service hours for school by volunteering with a variety of other organizations later on.
The world would be more harmonious if everyone did what they could to help someone else out. You don’t have to have a lot to be able to give something. I love that the kids are able to come in, feel pampered, and get a good haircut that they need in a salon setting. And I love seeing someone’s face light up after a haircut! I firmly believe that if you look good, you feel good, you have more confidence, and that helps with everything!
I also love my conversations with the kids, hearing what they like learning about, and what their hobbies are. Sometimes they share information about their lives and I am honored that they feel comfortable talking to me. I’ve been doing hair for over 15 years and I consider my chair a safe space.
I have had excellent interactions with the staff too! It seems like these are good people who are making every effort to help these kids. I love that DCH is a nonprofit dedicated to giving these kids a safe place to be, and tools to help work through whatever they may be going through.
I am just looking forward to continuing to do what I do day in and day out, providing a quality service to a kid in need! I work close by and it is easy to see this being a long term situation.
Thank you so much to Allison for everything you do for our kids at Denver Children’s Home! (You can find Allison at Common Salon www.commonsalon.com or @allison.clements.hair)
