Our kids’ take on DEI
This month, a group of students from our Bansbach Academy created and presented their own information and insights about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion — what it means, what it doesn’t, and how we can all stay open to learning.
Our kids shared with their classmates, teachers, and other staff that diversity means everyone has differences — those differences can look like race, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical/mental ability, religion, and ethinicity. They explained that equity means standing for justice, fairness, and equal chances for everyone, and give people the tools they need to succeed. They talked about inclusion as making an environment where everyone feels included, respected, welcomed, and having a sense of belonging. They shared work about misconceptions and misunderstanding about what DEI means, that it’s about encouraging understanding of people’s unique experiences, challenges, and barriers that have been faced, not pointing fingers or blaming.
They also shared they’re own experiences of DEI at Denver Children’s Home:
1 to 1 support
learning about different cultures
treating everyone fairly
accepting others and their identities
having respect and empathy
including others so they don’t feel alone
listening to each other, taking in feedback
We couldn’t be more proud of the effort, the bravery to present their work and findings, and the way our kids see these important aspects of their time with us!
